  • protease inhibitors, ganciclovir, methadone, ribavirin
Cautions
  • abacavir should always be used as a component of a multidrug regimen
Adverse Effects

  • fat redistribution
  • immune reconstitution syndrome
  • lactic acidosis
  • hepatomegaly
  • fatigue
  • malaise
  • nausea
Instructions and dose
(initial; typical)
300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily in combination with other antiretroviral agents
Monitoring
  • CD4 count
  • HIV RNA plasma levels
  • complete blood count
  • serum creatine kinase
  • serum transaminases
  • triglycerides
  • serum amylase
