Contraindications
• active liver disease, alcohol, pregnancy
Drug interactions
• digoxin, warfarin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, gemfibrozil, grapefruit juice, verapamil
Cautions
• use with caution in patients with advanced age or renal impairment (these patients are predisposed to myopathy)
Adverse Effects (common and severe)• diarrhea
• arthralgia
• nasopharyngitis
• increased serum transaminases
• myopathy
• rhabdomyolysis
Instructions and dose
(initial; typical)
10 to 80 mg once daily (doses should be individualized according to the baseline LDL-cholesterol concentrations)
Monitoring• lipid panel (total cholesterol; HDL; LDL; triglyceride)
• liver transaminases levels
• creatine phosphokinase (CPK)
